Founded by Francois Filiatrault, a custom furniture maker with 21 years drumming experience, Unix is the blend of two creative passions: artistic wood design and beautiful music.

The Stave Shell Advantage Unix is the world-wide leader in domestic and exotic custom, hard wood stave drum shell design and construction.
We use solid stave shells, which are naturally more resonant than the plywood shells used by some drum builders. Stave shells have a distinct advantage over plywood: they sound and project better because the wood grain remains unstressed and in its natural alignment. There’s no bending or layers of tone-dampening glue like that used in plywood shell construction, so vibration conducts directly from the bearing edge into the sound cavity and onto the resonant head.
